Investigation found two-thirds of more than 1,800 detainees 'dropped off the grid' from 'Alligator Alcatraz'?
Rumors swirled online that two-thirds of detainees were missing from "Alligator Alcatraz." These rumors spread across multiple platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X.
We looked into the rumor and found it stemmed from investigations published by the Miami Herald that claimed the whereabouts of two-thirds of more than 1,800 men detained at the Florida detention center during the month of July — as of the end of August — were unknown. Trump and members of his administration, including White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, spoke recently at a memorial service for conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Miller is an architect of Trump's most exclusionary immigration policies who has also been accused of expressing white nationalist rhetoric.
Many online compared his words to those of Joseph Goebbels, Adolf Hitler's propaganda chief. According to one post, Miller "plagiarized" his speech from a 1932 Goebbels address titled "The Storm is Coming.” Reporter Nur Ibrahim looked into the claim.
