A claim spread online that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was contracting, or would contract, bounty hunters to find and detain immigrants without permanent legal status in the U.S.

One X user wrote: "Bounty Hunters Deputized By ICE!! $1000.00 to $1500.00 PER UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANT Anyone walking around with their face covered is not working legally!!" Snopes reporter Laerke Christensen investigated whether claims like these were true.
