Special Coverage: 2nd Apparent Trump Assassination Attempt
People on both sides of the political aisle are claiming the suspect's politics are different from their own.
1. What We Know About Alleged Attempt to Assassinate Trump in Florida
In the second close call for former U.S. President Donald Trump in just over two months, an armed man got within 400 yards of Trump on his Florida golf course on Sept. 15.
The ordeal began when a Secret Service agent walking ahead of Trump on the golf course noticed a rifle barrel "poking out of the tree line," officials said.
The agent fired toward the rifle, and a man ran toward a vehicle. The suspect was arrested 45 minutes later on Interstate 95.
2. Suspect in Trump Golf Course Incident Had Ambiguous Politics
People across the political spectrum claimed Ryan Routh believed in the political ideology opposite theirs.
However, evidence from social media, public records and a self-published book suggest that Routh's politics did not neatly align with the labels that pundits applied to him.
2nd Would-Be Trump Assassin Didn't Appear in BlackRock Commercial
Within hours of the apparent assassination attempt, rumors and conspiracy theories about the incident flooded social media. One of those theories suggested there was a connection between the suspect and BlackRock, the multinational investment company.
However, the only “evidence” of such a connection was the appearance of the suspect in a video falsely alleged to be a BlackRock TV commercial.
