No, Elon Musk Didn't Say He Wants to Cut Social Security Benefits

Multiple Snopes readers asked us to investigate a rumor that Elon Musk promised to cut Social Security benefits in his position leading the Department of Government Efficiency. Many social media posts have attributed this quote to Musk: "It will be my objective to phase out Social Security, to pull it out by the roots!"

As of this writing, however, Musk hasn’t promised to cut Social Security benefits. He also hasn't said he wants to "phase out" Social Security or "pull it out by the roots."
