Investigating claim sheriff's deputy emailed Thomas Crooks before Trump assassination attempt
Social media posts allege that newly released FBI documents show that a Butler County sheriff’s deputy had exchanged emails with would-be assassin Thomas Crooks prior to the 2024 attempt on Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. The rumor gained traction after Judicial Watch, a conservative activist organization, announced that it had forced the FBI to release 48 pages of information about the attack.
Because the government heavily redacted the documents, we couldn’t completely disprove the theory. But reporter Jack Izzo explains why the claim doesn't hold up under scrutiny.
